The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Each time a prominent awards ceremony approaches, you'll find a demand for the addition fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of fans with niche passions.

My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories actually cover many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything that year
  • A different innovative game missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
  • Just some puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're compact experiences, however the design of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games globally and have been for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
